tunes i like tuesday: i know you know

I am not always up on what is playing on mainstream radio.  My kids love music and there is always something playing somewhere around the Mouse House though and this helps me stay "in the know".  (That and they commandeer the radio the minute we hop in the car.) Even if I didn't have my kids to help me out, I'd have to be living under a rock not to know who Justin Bieber is. So I was intrigued to find out that Esperanza Spalding, someone I had never even heard of, beat him for Best New Artist at Sunday night's Grammy Awards.  (No, I didn't watch them.  I don't do awards shows but from all accounts, the live music at this year's Grammys may have been worth the effort. And for the record, my vote would have been for Florence and the Machine.)

I checked Esperanza out and was pleasantly surprised.  Esperanza is a jazz bassist/singer who ends up combining a lot of different genres and influences in her music.  Her Grammy win was the first time a jazz artist has won Best New Artist... so obviously I'm not the only one who has been smitten by her sound.

The song featured, "I Know You Know", can be found on her debut album entitled Esperanza.  Have a listen and let me know what you think.  Do you think she deserved to win? Over Justin?  Do you think she's destined to go places musically?

  1. I like her. Thanks for sharing the video.

And anyone deserved to win over Justin.

  2. she's wonderful--i'll have to see if i can find a cd (i still don't do i tunes or other downloads--pathetic, i know!).

  3. I had never heard of her either, but maybe she is not known here in Italy yet. Thanks for sharing, an interesting new sound.

  4. Love the video!
Thanks for following. I'm following you back.

  5. Following you from the blog hop. I also hadn't heard of this person.

  6. I heard about this! I heard it had so many Bieber Fans upset, but really the 12 year old singer has a long time to get to the top of the charts. I'm happy for this gal.

I'm following back from the hump day hop! Thanks for stopping by and linking up!

I have some amazing handmade giveaways going on! Take a peek!

  9. Thanks for sharing the video! I have to create a Pandora station with her music. Love the song and she has the best style. I read many natural hair blogs and she was interviewed on one a few months ago. Her hair is pure awesomeness!

Oh, I'm here via SITS again! ; )

  10. Wow, she is a fantastic singer and I am so pleased she picked up the Grammy instead of Justin Beiber - someone somewhere has taste.

Visiting via .... (hmmmm).... not quite sure who's blog I clicked through but I am so pleased that I did.

  11. I, too, had not heard of her!
So glad I had a listen...she is COOL!!
    Thanks for linking :)

  12. I was unaware of her as well. Thank you.

  13. Wow. Not only is she uber talented, but GORGEOUS as well. Thanks for introducing her to us.

THANK GOD she beat JB as best new artist in the Grammys! A real artist was picked for once, although best new artist is often the kiss of death. I hope she continues making outstanding music. She is truly amazing.

Speaking of the Grammy's, I couldn't believe Lady Antebellum beat Ray LaMontagne. That's just annoying. He is a much better musician than them.

  14. I hadn't heard of her - but I can sure see why she won! Love her sound! :)

    I'm now following you... ;)

  15. Never heard of her before the Grammy's either! Amazing!!

  16. She is wonderful! It's so nice to have some new jazz. I love the classics, but she's a breath of fresh air.
