tunes i like tuesday: heartbeats
I think the first time I heard José González was during an episode of Scrubs. The one where JD's baby is born, to be exact. (Okay... I went through a semi-serious Scrubs phase. I still think the show is cleverly written and it also has some of the best music on television. I would love to steal Zach Braff's iPod.)
González's voice is soft and soothing and his guitar playing is memorable. Born in Sweden of Argentinian parents, González grew up listening to Latin music and his fingerstyle is reminiscent of tango and the other folk music of Latin America.
He covers his fellow Swedes, The Knife, in the video below, which is actually an advertisement for Sony. I prefer his cover. The Knife's version has a definite Scandinavian sound. Interestingly enough, Sony released two versions of the ad, the only difference is the performer. I'm including The Knife's version as well. Which do you prefer?
I love the bouncing balls and all the vibrant colors. My favorite part of the video is when the frog jumps out of the drain. It's a fun video, a great song and González is an artist worth listening to again (and again). Enjoy and tell me what you think.

I really love the first one. The second one is okay, but it doesn't hit as much of an emotional chord with me like the first one does. Oh, and that's SF (I think!)
ReplyDeleteI'm sitting in a very loud, very busy Atlanta Bread Company. So I can't listen. But I would LOVE to steal Zach's iPod. He has the best taste in music. Still love to listen to the Garden State soundtrack
ReplyDeleteI like the first one the best too. I agree with Slow Panic- the Garden State soundtrack is amazing, and there were times when the music on Scrubs moved me to tears.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this!
Sarah
played this for wyatt and he instantly started dancing. hahahaha, it's hilarious. i really like this song too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! If you were into Scrubs, perhaps you have heard of Michael Tolcher? Some of his tunes have been on Scrubs. Check him out if you haven't.
ReplyDeleteI listened to the first one (by Gonzalez) with my husband (who's from Venezuela) and we both really liked it. We could definitely hear the Latin influence in the guitar--very mellow and very soothing--both his guitar and voice. I'd love to hear more of his music.
ReplyDeleteI liked his version over The Knife's version too. And the bouncing balls are magnificent.
Scrubs is probably my favorite show of all time!
ReplyDeleteHuh - interesting - I definitely like the first version better! But maybe that's because I've heard that version before? Who knows - it's a very cool video though! Thanks for sharing. :)
ReplyDeletePS: I found you from the Lady Bloggers tea party! Love your blog! :)
What a brilliant advert and I liked the music never heard of him before but preferred this first version.
ReplyDeleteI like the first one best, too - brilliant! :)
ReplyDeleteDancing Crazy - It's Friday...wait! It's MMMM
Move me baby! Never heard either one before, but the second one had me groovin' Totally cool. Thanks for sharing. I see you used a previous Post, smart idea. Very cool. Hope to see you next week too!
ReplyDeleteI love finding new songs.
ReplyDeleteVery nice
So glad you shared with us today.
Aloha!
I love all the color flying around.
ReplyDeleteI totally loved the first one... I adore Spanish guitar. I used to play when I was younger and the finger picking is really tough and this one was just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI really don't care for the second one, I'm not so much into techno music.
I love the commercial though with all the colorful balls bouncing & I, too LOVED the froggie. :)
